The resplndent isle’ of early legend is fringed by 1,000 miles of coastline, with soft golden sands. Whilst these tropical beaches offer obvious temptations, inland Sri Lanka is a profusion of dense forests crowned by Buddhist temples and spice gardens laced with waterfalls. Ancient ruins of early civilisations nestle amid the central uplands, adding a mystical touch whilst plantations and hill stations are a legacy of the colonial days.

The best season for beaches on the western coast is between November and April where the seas are calm and ideal for sea bathing or scuba diving. Other water sports such as water skiing, jet skiing, sailing and fishing expeditions are available throughout the year. Negombo beach is renowned for its wide range of seafood while Bentota further south has a broad sandy beach ideal for swimming or sun bathing. Hikkaduwa is another famous beach stretch, which is ideal for diving and viewing underwater coral.
